Tyre wholesaler and retailer AutoXpress Ltd is offering owners of sports utility vehicles an insurance package for tyres.

The firm, with over 20 outlets in Kenya and Rwanda, has been increasingly aggressive since private equity firm Actis acquired a 36 per cent stake through a cash injection in early 2014.

The product, XtraSure Tyre Damage Guarantee, will be offered in partnership with APA Insurance to protect owners from paying for any “unwarranted” repairs or unplanned replacement of tyres damaged on the roads.

This comes at a time when heavy rains have damaged roads including cutting off sections of major networks, according to Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA).

“Many roads in Kenya are in dire need of an upgrade. The uneven, unsealed surfaces and road hazards are common and these pose a threat to even the most careful driver. The XS TDG is the answer to this,” Apollo Group CEO Ashok Shah said. The cover will guarantee any tyre brand bought from AutoXpress countrywide against damage from rocks, broken glass, nails, kerbs and potholes.

“When you buy your tyres from AutoXpress, whatever happens to them, your fault or not, we’ll fix or replace them. We will sort out anything from kerb damages, rips, punctures to glass cuts,” said AutoXpress Ltd managing director Sandeep Shah.

The package will be free of charge for the first year and can be extended to the second year at a charge of three per cent of the initial purchase price of the tyres.

Damaged tyres

The customer will be entitled to a maximum of one tyre replacement or three repairs per covered tyre provided the repair is carried out at an AutoXpress centre.

A customer service representative registers a motorist once he buys and fits tyres at any AutoXpres centre, then an electronic confirmation is sent to ratify a successful registration under the cover.

In case of damage to insured tyres, claims have to be submitted at an AutoXpress centre within 48 hours.

Evaluation will be carried out on the tyres to determine if they need to be repaired or replaced.

In the event of a replacement, the amount to be paid by the customer will be established based on the calculated remaining tread or treads, the company said.
