ICT summit to chart way for digital services in county govts

Stakeholders in the ICT industry converge in Mombasa next week to take stock of Kenya’s developments in the technology scene and develop a strategy to deepen digitisation of government operations.

The Connected Kenya Summit is also expected to chart how the government and the private sector can work to grow the uptake of technology in business, governance and service delivery.

Themed The County Citizen. Served, the conference will explore ways county governments can leverage on technology in development planning and predicting future challenges.

“This Summit is not about techie issues, neither is it an academic exercise, it is very simply about how ICT can be deployed to make service delivery more efficient to the every Kenyan,” said Paul Kukubo, chief executive of Kenya ICT Board.

“It is about national strategies and policies and how they can contribute to enhanced service delivery to the county citizen. It is about service, using ICT as an enabler.”

Information, Communication and Technology Cabinet secretary Fred Matiang'i will officially preside over the two-day conference that brings together more than 400 delegates consisting government bureaucrats, private sector executives, regional tech leaders and developers.

The summit will be held at the Sarova Whitesands Hotel from the May 27 – 28.

With eight out of every ten Kenyans having access to mobile telephony, the device has gone beyond the traditional call and text functions.

Mobile phones can now be used to provide financial services such as money transfer, payment of utility bills and shopping.

Kenyan techies have developed multiple applications in education, agriculture and health; and the government now plans to ride on country’s high mobile penetration to provide services.
