Safaricom-backed taxi app Little Cab has launched a service in which Kenyans will request for a ride on their phones without going to the internet, targeting users without smartphones.

Customers will now have the option of simply dialling the code *826# on their mobile phones to request for a cab.

Little Cab, developed jointly by Safaricom and local IT firm Craft Silicon, said that the USSD taxi hailing service seeks to grab a new market of millions of feature phones users, previously locked out.

The launch is set to rev up competition with other e-taxi providers like Uber, Mondo Ride and Taxify in the battle for riders.

“The idea behind Little Cab powered by Safaricom is to provide affordable and convenient cab services to as many Kenyans as possible and I believe we are well on our way to achieving this through the launch of the USSD service,” Craft Silicon CEO Kamal Budhabhatti said in a statement.

The off-net rides request feature is expected to also favour smartphone users in saving their data bundles.

Little Cab also unveiled a programme to reward customers “with airtime worth their ride up to a maximum of Sh500 upon completion of their first and fifth rides.”
