  • “We are going to add another 140MW to the grid, of much cheaper and greener energy,” Uhuru Kenyatta says.

  • Head of State said another 140MW of geothermal power would be added to the national grid by the year’s end.

President Uhuru Kenyatta is announcing planned reductions in the cost of power today when he launches a new geothermal electricity project.

“(On Friday) we will be in a good position to make an announcement on reduction of power cost to business and household consumption,” Mr Kenyatta said at a business summit in Kigali, Rwanda Thursday. “We are going to add another 140MW to the grid, of much cheaper and greener energy.”

The Head of State said another 140MW of geothermal power would be added to the national grid by the year’s end bringing down power bills by 50 per cent, in addition to a 30 per cent drop that should be noticed immediately.

“You will not have growth without energy,” Mr Kenyatta told business and government leaders attending the Sixth East African Business Summit (EABS). “The two go hand-in-hand. As a region and as Kenya in particular, we want to expand energy capacity to achieve the kind of growth rate we expect in 2020 and beyond. We are making big investments.”

He said Kenya’s energy requirements cannot be met by the government alone. “That is why we in Kenya have opened doors completely to private sector to invest in energy,” he said.

Regionally, President Kenyatta said member states are working to improve connectivity between Kenya and Uganda, Uganda and Rwanda and South Sudan and Ethiopia to maximize the energy and potential future developments which will make energy accessible and at affordable price.

“Kenya sees great potential for private sector involvement. We are waiting to look at the gas finds. We will first use it for power and not just for gas exports. This will help us improve energy,” he said.
