Buni, a multimedia firm and producers of The XYZ Show, is set to launch a pan-African independent digital video distribution platform next Wednesday targeting Internet and mobile phone users.

The company says the move will enable it to reduce reliance on third parties to distribute its products and increase reach.

The new Buni Television will be available through its website, www.buni.tv for Internet access and www.m.buni.tv for iPhones, Android and Blackberry smartphones.

Initially, access will be free of charge as it grows user traffic.

Ms Marie Lora-Mungai, the firm’s chief executive and co-founder, told the Business Daily that the company would mainly focus on distributing short documentaries, television shows, animation, Web series and music videos.

This means that the firm will not offer the same content as the free-to-air television.

It also expects to share the revenue generated through advertisement placements on its sites with the film makers on a 50:50 basis.

Previously, the firm had to distribute its content such as The XYZ Show through television channels, radio stations and buses, which, the firm says, it did not have control over the time of airing or the revenue collection.

Other than providing film producers a channel to distribute and monetise their content, Ms Lora-Mungai said that the platform would make it easy for audience to access their products.

“Mobile video is just starting in Africa and what we are doing now is to position ourselves for this untapped market,” she said.

“We don’t want to perpetuate the idea that content from Africa is mediocre. As such, we will be looking for very high quality short documentaries.”

She added that local producers find it difficult to market their production and have to wait until they are recognised at film events before their work is bought.

The company has partnered with Inmobi, the largest independent global mobile advertising network for the venture.

Improvement in telecommunications infrastructure in the region has made it possible for firms to roll out such a platform.

Presence of fibre optic technology has increased Internet bandwidth and speed for access of media content.
