For those of you who will be in town for the holiday season, here are places you can patronise for a drink.

SLIM’S LOUNGE

Off Ralph Bunche Road. Go on Tuesdays, there is always a band. Something home grown. The crowd is mature. Parking might be a problem, because it’s their popular night.

QUEEN’S BAR

Off Ngong Road at Harlequins Club. Last Friday of the month is the best time to go because it’s TCIF (Thank Capital it’s Friday), which is hosted by Capital FM. There is always a popular deejay on that night. The crowd is mostly sports enthusiasts. .
EXPLORER TAVERN

Ole Odume Road. Go on Wednesday or Friday. The former is Rhumba night, the latter party night. The crowd is 40-plus. It’s laid back, mature and fun. This is a whisky haven. It’s cheaper to order by the bottle. The DJ is always a killer.

POTS AND PANS

At Office Park on Riverside DriveVery mature crowd, rhumba lovers. Go on Thursdays. There is a band, with a blind guy on the keyboard. Wear something warm, and don’t forget your dancing shoes.

AKSUM BAR, SERENA

Kenyatta Avenue. Walk in every Friday if you want a very relaxed time. Those nights are acoustic nights, where these two chaps come on and play their instruments. You will sit among plutocrats, wheeler-dealers, politicians, celebrities (whatever that is), uber businessmen and ladies who have put a lot of imagination to their dressing.

QUE PASA BAR

Karen. You have to order their pizza. Generally their food is all that and more. You go on a Friday because it’s jubilant and fun and everybody is hanging loose. Seating might be a problem if you go late, so be prepare to stand with your drink in your hands.

SHEREHEZ BAR

Lenana Road almost opposite Osteria. Any night towards the end of the week is good. It’s very middle-class, no pretences. Service might get a bit slow, but hey, it’s Christmas, hakuna matata. There is a deejay during the weekend. The terrace might get chilly, so carry something warm. Order a beer.

CHAMPAGNE BAR

Sankara Hotel. If you’re looking to celebrate something, want to go posh and don’t mind spending Sh10,000 on a nice bottle or Sh2,000 on a glass. If you like fancy. You can always finish it off by the poolside. Order champagne.

MERCURY LOUNGE

ABC place or The Junction. Good crowd always at both of these places. At ABC, you probably need to go later, say 11pm to midnight. It throbs and hums. At The Junction, it’s a sports bar, so go if you want to catch a match on mute. Order cocktails at ABC and spirits at The Junction.
