Hundreds of Imperial Bank Limited customers in Mombasa County were Tuesday turned away after they were shocked by a closure notice pinned on the banks’ gate.

The customers who had gone to the bank to withdraw or deposit money were disappointed when they could not be allowed in as the bank had been temporarily closed by Central Bank of Kenya (CBK).

At the Kilifi branch, winner of the prestigious Goldman environmental Africa award Phyllis Omido said the closure of the bank had crippled services at her organization. Omido won Sh15 million as part of the award.

The organization centre for justice governance and environmental action (CJGEA) which she runs has three accounts with the bank.

“I was shocked when I came to transact some business at the bank and found the notices here. When I won the award I donated half of it to my organization which has an account with the bank and I also have a personal account and my son’s account too. Donors also channel funds through this bank,” said Ms Omido.

She urged the central bank to quickly make arrangements for customers to access their money. She said that the current situation has inconvenienced her since she cannot run the organization without money.

Not possible

At the Mombasa branch, a customer who chose not to be named said he had gone to the bank to withdraw money so that he could sort out some issues but it was unfortunate that the bank had been closed.

“Transactions are not possible, I was turned away by the security guards at the gate who told me the bank had been closed, I am saddened by the unfortunate decision to close the bank,” he said.

He castigated CBK for closing the bank without giving a prior notice to enable them transfer their money to another bank.

“At least they should have given a one week notice so that we can sort ourselves, but an abrupt closure has greatly affected our lives.”

The victims who spoke to Nation said the closure of the bank has left them with no option since they had all their savings in the bank.

A notice pinned on the gate indicated that CBK has appointed the Kenya Deposit Insurance Corporation (KDIC) to assume the management and control of the bank for a period of 12 months pursuant to the provision of Section 34(2) (b) of the Banking Act and sections 43 and 53(1) of the Kenya Deposit Insurance Act 2012.
