  • The tale is set against the backdrop of Luhya myth, specifically of Luhya gods

Aroji Theatre Academy presents Behind Metal Bars, which premieres this Friday night through Sunday at The Elephant in Lavington.

The original script is by Muscat Moreno, who is also one of the stars in the play.

The script is based on a tragic but true story of an inmate stuck in Shimo la Tewa Maximum Prison.

It’s a story that contrasts a retributive justice, which is largely what Kenya’s prison system has, to a restorative justice system which is focused in rehabilitation rather punishment and pain.

Muscat plays Ex, the inmate who’s been accused by his employer of fraud. Ex is innocent but due to inadequate legal counsel he’s convicted to five years in prison not including the 90 days he spent in remand.

Ex’s jailer is played by Ibrahim Michemi. Brigette Ikwara, best known as a graceful contemporary dancer, plays Anita even as director Aroji Otieno integrates her dance into the script.

Aroji’s Theatre Academy was founded two years back and several of the academy students serve as a backdrop to the cast. Aroji is the Luo translation of Rogers which is good to know since we know Rogers. not Aroji.

The following week, Heartstring Entertainment will stage its latest comedy, Kenya Without Wives from Wednesday through the coming Sunday at Alliance Francaise.

Then the following week there will be two exciting performances, one the seriously revised version of Sitawa Namwalie’s Room of No Names from Friday, June 9 through Sunday June 11 at Braeburn Theatre.

Directed by Matthew Swallow, Sitawa’ story revolves loosely around the life and afterlife of the Nairobi University student Mercy Keino. The tale is set against the backdrop of Luhya myth, specifically of Luhya gods.

Omywanga is the one representing darkness and mischief played by Mufasa, while Gumali is the one representing light and goodness played by Checkmate Mido. The so-called ‘Dead Girl’ is played by Nanussaasi Nasmiga while Temptation is played by Lara Ekumbo.

Finally, The Return of a Living Legend and his African textile tour will be launched June 8, both online courtesy of Google which is staging an African Fashion Extravaganza and from the Rift Valley Railways.

The train will take visitors to African Heritage House where Alan Donovan will escort guests around his house and textile collection assembled since the early 1970s.
