Stakeholders in the shipping industry have opposed the decision by the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) to raise fees for users of the port.

Kenya Shippers Council (KSC), The Federation of East African Freight Forwarders Association (FEAFFA) and Kenya Maritime Authority (KMA) have opposed Kenya Ports Authority’s decision to raise port tariffs saying it ignored the contribution of stakeholders.

The new charges will be for services such as marine services and ship dues, stevedoring services –and for shore-handling, wharfage and storage services. Stevedoring is the charge for offloading and loading while wharfage are fees charged on the ship for using the port.

If the new charges are implemented importers are expected to pay an estimated Sh3.8 billion more in fees per year at the port in what could lead to higher commodity prices in the region.

“KSC wishes to distance itself from the new tariffs and clarify that this it is indeed opposed to the tariff review in view of the clandestine manner in which the review was handled,” said the chairman of the Kenya Shippers Council Gilbert Langat.

FEAFFA rejected the move in a statement posted on its website saying the new tariffs will increase the cost of doing business in the region leading to high commodities prices for the consumers
