What you need to know:

  • Medics who attended to her at a local hospital before she was flown to London said she succumbed to a heart ailment even when other reports maintain she died from severe arthritis.

The former First Lady Lucy Kibaki's characteristic stern approach to issues featured prominently during the requiem Mass held at the Consolata Shrine in Westlands, Nairobi.

The Kibaki family and other close relatives led by former President Mwai Kibaki followed the Mass proceedings keenly besides the casket that was draped in the Kenyan flag.

"In my own personal capacity, Mama Lucy is one person I have known most of my life and I can assure you there were no half ways with her… you were either on her right side or her wrong side and I can assure you if you were on her wrong side it was not a very pleasant experience,” said President Uhuru Kenyatta adding that she will be remembered for her fight against the HIV scourge and the strong family values she held.

Deputy President Ruto remembered her as a mother “who was different and spoke her mind freely”.

“I remember one time she called me and I had to do some soul searching to know whether I had provoked her in any way. No wonder Jimmy and his siblings are well behaved because they had Lucy as a mother,” said Mr Ruto during the mass that was broadcasted on live television.

The Mass which was moderated by Nyeri County Senator Mutahi Kagwe, was graced by key leaders led by President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto.

The body leaves Lee Funeral home on Saturday at 7am to pass through their Muthaiga home briefly before heading to Othaya for the final rites.

Entertain hypocrisy

Mama Lucy was eulogized by her daughter Judy Kibaki who said that she did not “entertain hypocrisy of any kind”.

Special tributes were paid by seven of her grandchildren who described her as loving and caring grandmother who loved music and art.

Her son Tony Kibaki gave the votes of thanks on behalf of family as the Mass came to an end at around 12.30pm, while remembering all the medical practioners who attended to Mama Lucy before her demise; more so some seven ladies who were her 24 hours caregivers while receiving treatment from home.

The Mass was presided over by Cardinal Njue. Mrs Kibaki passed away while undergoing treatment at Bupa Cromwell Hospital in London, United Kingdom on April 26, 2016.
