Sacco scuttles another big idea from Moses on making quick cash

How I missed the promised gravy train as society rejects my application for Sh2m

I have literally hit the ground running with the finance job and my head is already swimming from all the work I have to do.

The HR manager is yet to provide me with a full job description, so I have been relying on the email requests to piece together what is expected of me.

I have received all manner of requests for monthly financials and half yearly reports. I am also looking at some new business development opportunities so I have resorted to coming into the office by 6.30 am so I can get a head start on work.

Shiro has not taken kindly to this new schedule. She says I am using my new schedule to abscond from the fatherly duties.

My new schedule means that I do not have time to drop Maingi to school and also to do homework in the evening. Truth be told, I would rather be home doing homework instead of poring through all manner of spreadsheets.

Shiro holds a different view and I have now realised that sometimes the best way to deal with arguments with Shiro is to keep quiet and let her win.

Her nagging about my new job paved the way for her to nag me yet again about “the farming proposal.” She keeps asking me when shall we start farming.

The conservative part of me is not comfortable with farming in my wife’s piece of land, especially considering it was given to her by her father.

I keep thinking that if we have a small argument, it will lead to the closure of the venture. Another reason for my stalling is that due to some strange twist in my fate, I have a million bob I could invest. The story stands and ends with my buddy Moses.

I had decided to put a stop to Moses’ deals but somehow he was very persistent in reaching out to me. He kept telling me, “boss! You are missing out on the gravy train. You will regret this one day.”

So I decided to take a risk and give him about half a million shillings to invest. I was taken aback by his reaction. He said: “My guy the way you have been dithering, I thought you were holding on to five million.”

This actually annoyed me and I could not help but tell him, “ since this is too little for you, maybe you can give it back to me.” I think Moses realised the folly of his ways and laughed, saying, “ you need to relax my friend!

You cannot take a joke.” I made an attempt at laughing though internally I was a bit miffed by this conduct and sentiments.

So, when two weeks later, Moses presented me with a rather healthy cheque, I found myself being very forgiving. Fuelled by this “win”, I decided to up the stakes and take a really huge gamble.

I approached the company sacco and requested an additional Sh2 million loan. I reckoned that if all goes well I could repay that money in six months.

The sacco managers decided that I was not eligible for another Sh2 million considering that I had borrowed a similar amount just three months ago. The loan manager told me: “Though you have paid back 90 per cent of the initial loan, we feel that Sh2 million is a bit on the high side.”

I was very annoyed since this, after all, is “my money.’ Despite grovelling quite a bit, I ended up just getting Sh1 million much to my dismay and to Moses’ deep disappointment.

He said: “How do you expect to become a millionaire when you keep risking peanuts?” This time I could not take it any more and I retorted: “Since you clearly think that I am not a risk taker then you should not take my money.”

Moses did not like this and since we were talking on the phone, he said, “You are being too serious.” I felt that I could not continue being treated with such disrespect.

I decided, “Why give the money to someone else yet I can buy land for that amount. Let’s just hope that I have not made a stupid mistake.
