Reports that Kenya has received approval from the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to commence direct flights to the United States are most welcome.

Given that a lot of effort has been put to achieving the Category One status that will see non-stop flights to the US, our State agencies, especially the security organs, must not drop the ball.

Kenya now joins South Africa, Ethiopia, Cape Verde and Nigeria in the club of African countries that have been granted the Category One status.

In order to attain and maintain  the rating, a country must demonstrate compliance with safety standards contained in the International Civil Aviation Organisation’s practices for aircraft operations and maintenance.
