Reports that construction of the Sh6. 5 billion cable car crossing linking Mombasa island with the mainland is set to commence in December are very welcome.

The proposed transport solution is long overdue given that it has major benefits for the country’s tourism sector whose core artery is the Coast region.

The current reliance on the ferry crossing to transport commuters across the Likoni channel has become unreliable due to frequent breakdowns.

One of the major challenges facing the tourism sector are the long hours visitors transiting through Mombasa are forced to wait due to delays at the crossing.

Having a reliable cable crossing that operates in tandem with the ferry service would go a long way in easing transportation woes in the region.

Kenya needs to borrow lessons from the developed countries where such modes of transport are the norm.

There is also need to enlighten the public on the benefits of paying the proposed Sh20 per trip given that they have previously resisted attempts to charge Sh10 for the ferry trip. The goal should always be an efficient and cheap mode of transportation.

It has been proven in the past that heavy reliance on free things can at times end up being very expensive.
