The decision by seven firms listed on the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) to disclose the executive pay is definitely setting the bar higher as far as corporate governance and transparency go.

It should be a tradition and need to be refined every now and then.

Any outfit that lists on the stock exchange is announcing to the whole world that they were ready for sharp scrutiny as required by the law and global best practice, and what intellectuals say about the subject in various papers and books.

Indeed, the listed firms say they have what it takes to operate without grey areas or sweeping anything under the carpet.

One of the facets of good leadership that also interests the current and potential investors in these firms is how much the top leadership takes home in pay.

The salaries are not mere figures but they show the stake- and shareholders how the executives are treated, their calibre and prudence, and whether they are treated well to make useful and long-term decisions that influence returns. Such developments in turn influence the entire economy.

We ask the Capital Markets Authority (CMA) to fully implement this requirement as a step of continuous reforms of Kenya’s capital markets and encouraging everyone else seeking to invest to do so having the right information, including executive remuneration.
