EDITORIAL: Resolve jobs stalemate

  • There should be clarity on how to unlock the stalemate in appointment of county executives.
  • On their part, governors should ensure that they don’t appoint their cronies to these jobs while the respective members of county assemblies should not reject the appointees merely for the sake of it.
  • We are right where we were after the 2013 elections, a period that saw some governors offer MCAs foreign jaunts at taxpayers’ expense so that they could approve their appointees.

Two months after the August 8 General Election, many county governments are still embroiled in disputes over the appointment of county executives.

There should be clarity on how to unlock the stalemate in appointment of county executives.

On their part, governors should ensure that they don’t appoint their cronies to these jobs while the respective members of county assemblies should not reject the appointees merely for the sake of it.

We are right where we were after the 2013 elections, a period that saw some governors offer MCAs foreign jaunts at taxpayers’ expense so that they could approve their appointees.

County residents are now bearing the brunt of the impasse since service delivery has been abandoned  as their leaders engage in trivial battles.

The endemic culture of treating public positions as avenues for enrichment must come to an end. The devolved units were created to facilitate service delivery to Kenyans at the grassroots.
