The government has completed the design of a 210 kilometre highway which will connect Malindi to Lunga Lunga at the coast. The road which is part of the Southern Corridor will be build through regional connectivity projects, said Infrastructure Principal Secretary John Mosonik.
The highway forms part of the Lamu-Dar es Salaam corridor which links Kenya and Tanzania. Mr Mosonik said Kenya will build the highway from Malindi in Kilifi County to Lunga Lunga in Kwale County.
The construction is estimated to cost Sh16 billion. Mr Mosonik said the government was seeking funds from development partners such as the African Development Bank and the World Bank and will factor the cost in the 2018/2019 budget.
Construction is expected to begin next year. “The highway is key to connecting Kenya’s North and South Coast to Dar es Salaam,” he said. In an interview with the Business Daily, Mr Mosonik said that the highway will boost tourism and trade with Tanzania. Another road linking Kenya and Tanzania, the Mwatate-Taveta road, will be commissioned next month.
Mr Mosonik said the 99 kilometre road built at a cost of Sh7.2 billion was 99 per cent complete.
The government is also rehabilitating the Mwatate-Wundanyi road at a cost of Sh1.2 billion.
The government is also rehabilitating a section of the road from Voi town to Mwatate, he said. “The Mwatate-Taveta road is key for the transportation of goods and passengers between Kenya and Tanzania,” he said.
Mr Mosonik said that traders from Tanzania use the road to transport goods bought in Mombasa while their Kenyan counterparts ferry goods from Tanzania.
Before the construction of the new road, transporters and travellers used to face challenges since the road was in a pathetic state.
