Liquid Telecom is among three companies that have won contracts worth a total Sh836 million to connect 896 secondary schools to high speed Internet in the first project to be financed under the Universal Service Fund.

The contracts were Monday awarded by the Communications Authority (CA) to Liquid Telecom, Xtranet Communications Ltd and Comcarrier Satellite Services.

The money will be used to meet the initial costs of setting up the Internet connections and to meet some of the operating costs over the next five years.

“We envisage increased broadband connectivity in all parts of the country including rural areas where majority of the schools are located,” said CA chairman, Mr Ngene Gituku in a statement.
