What you need to know:

  • Mr Ngengi was the eighth most searched term on Google.
  • Mr Ngengi gained public notoriety after he claimed, on live television, to have witnessed the Nyeri Governor car crash.
  • This was only three weeks after he had appeared on television in the aftermath of a helicopter crash in Lake Nakuru, claiming to be a “State pilot”.

Serial witness Dennis Muigai Ngengi was one of the top searches on Google last week as Kenyans sought to know more about the country’s “witness-in-chief.”

Data from the internet giant shows that the “eyewitness challenge,” a meme associated with the “top witness”, was the fourth trending search item while Mr Ngengi himself was the eighth most searched term on Google.

Mr Ngengi gained public notoriety after he claimed, on live television, to have witnessed the car crash that took the life of former Nyeri governor Wahome Gakuru on the Thika-Sagana road.

This was only three weeks after he had appeared on television in the aftermath of a helicopter crash in Lake Nakuru, claiming to be a “State pilot”.

Authorities have since probed the case of the serial witness and a report from the Director of Criminal Investigations and the Registrar of Criminal records shows that Mr Ngengi had, under different aliases, been charged eight times in the past for crimes ranging from giving false information to assault.

The late governor Gakuru was the top search on Google during the week as Kenyans sought to find out more about his family and his wife.

The second top trending search was football as fans Googled information about the English Premier League, Serie A and the World Cup Qualifiers.
