A new airstrip has been opened in Mandera County a year after the government earmarked more airstrips for construction and upgrade to boost domestic air travel.

The Elwak airstrip - launched Tuesday by Governor Ali Roba and County Commissioner Fredrick Shisia - sits on a ten-kilometre parcel of land with a runway that is two kilometres long and thirty metres wide.

Mr Roba hailed the project saying it would ease travel, adding it was a sign that devolution was working.

He also enumerated the various development projects initiated in the area.

“I did the symbolic stone laying ceremony for the construction of ultra-modern small and medium enterprises Park in El-Wak town,” he said, adding that his government was committed to improving infrastructure and raising the county's living standards.

Also present at the ceremony was Mandera South MP Mohamed Adan and officials from Kenya Airports Authority and the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority.
