Only two out of 10 public institutions have a mobile money or mobile payment account, indicating a sluggishness by the government to adopt a technology that has become common in Kenyans’ economic lives.

An ICT sector survey released on Wednesday shows that only 19.2 per cent and 20.7 per cent of State agencies have a mobile money account and a mobile payment account respectively.

“The survey findings reveal that mobile money accounts were not common in public institutions,” says the report co-authored by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) and the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA).

Schools and universities performed best in the adoption of mobile money with 48.6 per cent of them reporting that they had a mobile money account.
