Kenyans have an opportunity to weigh in on the types of phones that will be allowed into the local market before the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) puts in stone minimum standards for the devices. The CA has asked the public to comment on minimum technical specifications for mobile phones.
These standards dictate everything from the battery life to the appearance of phones in the local market. The specifications are pegged to international standards and although the CA says it has been using them to approve phones coming into Kenya, it now wants public input before “formalising” them.
“The use of the said standards was not publicly available for use by consumers, vendors and device manufacturers.
“The motivation for the publishing of the technical specifications is to provide a formal adoption of the minimum features and technical specifications acceptable for mobile cellular devices,” said the regulator in a statement to the Business Daily.
The CA expects that move will help fight the importation of sub-standard and counterfeit phones into Kenya.
