Postal Corporation of Kenya (PCK) is looking to design a mobile application that will enable users to buy stamps and locate post offices as it turns to technology to increase efficiency and boost lagging revenues.

In an advertisement Tuesday, Posta, as the corporation is commonly known, called on interested companies to apply for a contract to design and deliver a mobile application that will run on Windows, IOS and Android platforms.

“PCK wishes to have one mobile application that has all its products and services.

“These include but not limited to stamp sales, mail tracking, postage calculator, post office locator, postal services and promotions,” said Posta in the advertisement.

A revenue sharing model will be developed between Posta and the company that will ultimately win the contract.

The contract is open to Kenyan firms or foreign companies working with Kenyan partners.

Suppliers have been asked to submit bids by September 22.

Posta has been struggling to survive as technological advancements, meaning that Kenyans are increasingly opting to send emails rather than letters.

The 2015/2016 financial year was the worst on record for Posta as the firm recorded a Sh1.5 billion loss though revenues stood at Sh2.67 billion.

Posta is pursuing a turnaround strategy that relies heavily on technology. The company has in the past two year prioritised e-commerce. It has also pioneered M-Post, a service that links users’ post office boxes to mobile phone numbers.

However, Posta will have to do much more if it is to move from the red. A task force mandated to draw a turnaround plan for Posta in June recommended massive job cuts to save costs at the company.

An estimated 40 per cent of Posta’s 3,200 workers are aged over 55. Many of these workers, the government said earlier this year, have expressed the desire to go on early retirement.

However, Posta would need financial support to pay terminal benefits arising from such an exercise.
