The National Industrial Training Authority (Nita) is set to sponsor needy female Form Four leavers from Arid and Semi-Arid Lands to pursue engineering courses next year.

So far, 270 girls have benefited from the programme — which started in 2006 — with an investment of more than Sh100 million. The courses cover mechanical, automotive, electrical and civil engineering as well as survey, agriculture and building.

The courses at craft certificate and diploma levels target individuals from the marginalised areas including Mandera, Turkana, Lamu, Wajir, West Pokot, Kwale and Kitui.

Others are Mwingi, Tharaka-Nithi, Mbere, Transmara, Makueni, Kuria and Marigat.

“The successful applicants will be sponsored for training in various public technical training institutions in the country starting May 2018,” said Nita.

To qualify for a diploma course, one needs to have a Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education exam mean grade of C Plain with at least C Plus in Physics and English while a mean grade of D Plus is required for the craft courses.

Nita is a state agency that offers industrial training. Through the programme, 25 females are selected each year for a full scholarship to undertake technical training at diploma or craft certificate levels.

The authority has five industrial training centres — two in Nairobi and others in Athi River, Mombasa and Kisumu.
