About 10 million people in Kenya are facing starvation even as the country prepares for a repeat presidential election, a new report shows.

The study dubbed “Nourished” conducted by Malabo Montpellier Panel was unveiled during this year’s African Green Revolution Forum held in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.

It indicates that a quarter of Kenya’s population “lacks sufficient food intake required to meet minimum physiological needs and healthy life.”

Kenya’s peers in East Africa are facing a similar threat with 20 million people at risk in Ethiopia while South Sudan and Somalia are at the brink of famine, according to the researchers.

The panel, is an African Development Bank (AfDB) backed group of experts from the fields of agriculture, ecology, food security, nutrition, public policy and global development, which supports evidence-based dialogue among policy makers at the highest level.

“More needs to be done to achieve the Malabo Declaration targets of reducing prevalence of stunting, wasting, and underweight,” states the report.
