  • Communications Authority (CA) urged Kenyan computer users to be wary of emails from unknown senders as these may infect their systems with the Petya ransomware.

The government is warning Kenyans to beware of a malicious computer virus that has spread across the world since Tuesday, affecting operations at major multinational firms.

In a statement Wednesday, the Communications Authority (CA) urged Kenyan computer users to be wary of emails from unknown senders as these may infect their systems with the Petya ransomware.

Ransomware is a kind of malicious software that infects computers and blocks access to files unless users can pay money— the ransom— to have their data decrypted.

“Individuals and organisations are discouraged from paying the ransom, as this does not guarantee restoration of access,” said CA.

Petya, which is targeting computers using the Windows operating system, has been making its way across the globe and has infected such corporate giants as advertising firm WPP and Danish shipping company Maersk, according to reports by the Guardian newspaper.

This is the second global-scale ransomware attack in as many months after WannaCry terrorised computer users in May.

WannaCry affected at least 230,000 computers in over 150 countries.

CA has warned the public not to open attachments or click on links sent via e-mail if they do not know the senders of such communication.
