This year’s national examination candidates will have question papers and answer booklets combined into one document for all the subjects, the Kenya National Examination Council (Knec) has said.

The council said the papers will be combined where applicable.

In a brief to examination monitors on Monday, the council said the move is aimed at making administration of the examinations more efficient and effective as well as curbing cheating.

Multiple choice answer sheets for this year’s Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) candidates will also have personalised details like index number and name of a candidate.

Tough measures

These are some of the tough measures the government has taken to ensure no cheating is reported this year as was the case last year.

The council has also introduced personalised optical mark reader (OMR) forms for KCPE examination aimed at addressing cases of candidates who have challenges shading their index number correctly and those who inadvertently shade the lozenge (ellipse) for absent yet they sat for the examinations.

This would allow for marking of the multi-choice questions using a machine.

“The OMR forms are pre-printed with the index number, names of the candidates and the centre name and they are subject specific. The candidates are therefore expected to verify that the forms that they have been issued with have their correct index number, names and centre name and that they are for the correct subject,” added the brief.

Automatic grading

The brief also stated that candidates should handle the personalised OMR forms with care and not write or put marks on any other part of the form apart from shading the correct answers.

The marked answer sheet will be automatically graded by a newly acquired scanning machine, shortening the marking period. Knec has said results will be released earlier than last year.

“For every 20 candidates there should be one invigilator and for every 200 candidates there should be one supervisor.

"Supervisors and invigilators should  not have administered  examinations in the same  institution for more than two consecutive years,” stated the brief.

The council has also introduced new packaging ways of the examination materials.
