Nakuru town is famous as Kenya’s leisure’ capital but few know it as a hub for upcoming musicians. Some of its musicians accuse radio and TV presenters of denying them airplay.

For this reason, gospel singer Ezekiel Kimani aka Zae De Kim started the Muziki Umeenda Shule Initiative to promote artistes whose songs serve the community by spreading messages of peace and upright morals. This saw him collaborate with an upcoming musician Timam to produce two new hits, ‘‘Refill’’ and ‘‘Mbarikiwa’’, which are riding high on gospel charts. He identifies and nurtures young people who he assists to record and promote songs.

“I realised that most young people have talent but give up when they realise they can’t raise funds to record their music,” said Kimani.

“Coming from a humble background I saw my parents struggle to raise my school fees up to college. I have a certificate in IT and even though I was willing to continue with my education I could not raise school fees so I decided to look for a job,” he said. The quest for employment saw him venture into various sectors including milk supply, sales and marketing, selling phone accessories and working at a bookshop.

“I decide to launch my gospel career in 2012 out of passion. I faced nightmares pushing my music to be played on air,” he recalls.

The artiste has since performed in major shows which include Groove Tour and won numerous awards.

They include Artist of the Year at the Rift Valley Awards 2013, and Gospel Artist of the Year at the Flamingo Awards 2015 with the song ‘‘Mbarikiwa’’ scooping the Song of the Year award.
