What you need to know:

  • Banned alcohol said to be coming from Uganda.
  • Boda bodas in the area have been found to be smuggling the liquor to Kisumu.
  • Police working with KRA and the Kenya Wildlife Service to provide their boats to patrol the lake.

Police in Kisumu have today destroyed illicit brew with an estimated value of Sh200,000 in a swoop on unauthorised alcohol.

This comes after 4,800 sachets labelled Simba Waragi and Kokokoni were impounded last week at Holo along the Kisumu-Bondo Highway.

Kisumu West Deputy County Commissioner Mr Walter Ngaira, who oversaw the destruction, says that the illicit alcohol may have come from Uganda and was targeted at the city's revellers during this festive season.

“The sachets are from Uganda because they have been branded Chief Distiller Limited Uganda and Premier Distillers Limited Uganda. We are approaching the peak of the festive season and we suspected that they were being ferried to this place to be sold, “said Mr Ngaira Wednesday.

He decried continued influx of banned alcohol to Kisumu, attributing it to gains made from the crackdown on locally made chang'aa.

"These illicit brews have been penetrating our markets because currently our teams have intensified their crackdown on chang'aa. They therefore manage to bring these because they are easy to seal and transport," he said.

Mr Ngaira said their investigations had established that the illicit brew was finding its way into the country via porous border areas of Lake Victoria with boda bodas being the main mode of transport.

In order to fight the menace, he says authorities are now engaging all beach management and boda boda unit heads to share information so that they impound the liquor before it finds its way to the market.

The police is also working with the Kenya Revenue Authority and the Kenya Wildlife Service to assist them with their boats to patrol the lake.

"We are going full swing to ensure this stuff does not get into Kisumu again and affect our youth. We have had a session with KRA and KWS and they willing assist us with their boats to patrol the lake," he said.
