KWS director’s contract renewed

Kenya Wildlife Service director Julius Kipng’etich’s contract has been extended for another three years by President Kibaki.

Dr Kipng’etich has been director since 2004.

He inherited a loss making organisation that heavily relied on donors and Treasury for funds.

“It was not a matter of conservation, but a case of management problems that needed immediate redress,” Dr Kipng’etich said in a previous interview with the Business Daily.

Improving image

KWS is implementing its 2008-2012 strategic plan that looks at enhancement of wildlife conservation, diversification of revenue streams, and establishing an endowment fund to help cushion conservation work during hard economic times.

KWS plans to raise Sh8 billion in the next 10 years.

The organisation is turning its fortunes around as well as improving its image.

Currently, KWS raises 70 per cent of its funds, 25 per cent are from the government and five per cent from donors.
