Akasha kin charged with theft of Moi’s Range Rover

A member of the controversial Akasha family has been charged in a Nairobi Magistrate’s court with stealing a car belonging to former President Daniel Moi.
Mr Hassan Yusuf Abdalla denied the charge when he appeared before Senior Principal Magistrate Lucy Nyambura. He was released on a cash bail of Sh500, 000.
Mr Abdalla allegedly sold the car to Local Government minister Fred Gumo.
The prosecution said it would present at least nine witnesses, but the minister’s name was not among those presented to the court on Monday.
The car, which went missing from the CMC premises four years ago, was impounded on Friday when it was brought for service.
The minister’s driver brought in for service on Thursday.
The vehicle is now at Nairobi area police headquarters.
Mr Abdallah was arrested in Mombasa at the weekend after he presented himself to the police and was flown to Nairobi where he recorded a statement. He will return to court on October 16 for hearing.
The first charge says he and others stole from Cooper Motors Corporation (CMC) in Nairobi an unregistered green Range Rover valued at Sh18 million. Mr Gumo said he acquired the vehicle from a Mombasa-based businessman.
The minister recorded a statement with the police at the Criminal Investigation Department headquarters On Saturday. He had told journalists earlier that he bought the vehicle from a businessman who failed to “give him all the documents”.

The car bears registration number KBQ 455S but the records indicated that it was a KBJ 124D.
In a statement sent to newsrooms, CMC chief executive officer Bill Lay said the firm impounded the vehicle at their Nairobi workshop after they found that its details matched those of a car which went missing from their premises in 2008.
The saga is set to thrust the Akasha family back into the spotlight.
The family is not new to the controversy both in and out of court since the senior Akasha was killed in Amsterdam in 2000.
