The Equity Group foundation has invited applications for 2,000 scholarship positions for students who sat the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education this year.

The Equity Foundation in partnership with the MasterCard Foundation, KfW and UKAID— Monday started identifying potential beneficiaries who excelled in the national examinations, but who are unable to fund their secondary school studies.

The 2015 Wings to Fly comprehensive scholarship programme is the sixth.

This year’s scholarships will enable the programme to meet its goal of sponsoring 10,000 beneficiaries a year before the set date.

The pupils, who have until January 5 to apply, will be picked from every district or sub-county where Equity Bank has a branch.

The minimum mark for candidates eligibility is 350 except for few districts where the score may be lowered based on advice of the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) if it is established that using the set standards may exclude deserving applicants.

While making the announcement, Equity Group CEO and the foundation’s executive chairman, James Mwangi, said the bank was excited to give more needy pupils a chance to secure secondary education.

“This is part of our secondary school comprehensive scholarship initiative which targets 10,000 deserving students by the year 2015,” he said.

“We have reached that milestone with these 2,000 scholarships ahead of our target date and thanks to our partners, The MasterCard Foundation, USAid, KfW and UKAid for their support, ” Mr Mwangi said.
