Former Uchumi Supermarkets chief executive officer Jonathan Ciano has resigned as a director of listed manufacturer British America Tobacco Kenya (BAT).

BAT said in a notice copied to the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) that Mr Ciano had resigned as a non-executive director “for personal reasons...effective February 26, 2016.”

Mr Ciano was ousted from Uchumi in June last year after the retailer accused him of gross misconduct and gross negligence, alleging that he manipulated its financial statements to hide losses of more than Sh1 billion.

Earlier this month, the Institute of Certified Public Accountants (Icpak) pleaded with Mr Ciano to resign as the chairman of its disciplinary committee on grounds of professional misconduct, saying that this was in public interest and in the interest of the accountancy profession.

Mr Ciano responded that he was willing to resign, but took issue with Icpak’s public call for him to do so.
