The Geothermal Development Company (GDC) managing director Silas Simiyu has stepped down from his position, which the company's board has filled with the appointment of Godwin Mwawongo in an acting capacity pending investigations into graft allegations.
In a statement, the board chairman Faisal Abbas on Monday named Mr Mwawongo as the acting chief in line with a directive from President Uhuru Kenyatta over the weekend asking boards to do so.
Before his appointment, Mr Mwawongo served as general manager in charge of technical services having joined GDC in 2009. A reservoir engineer with twenty years experience in the energy sector, the new GDC boss has previously worked for KenGen and Kenya Power in various positions.
The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) is investigating claims of corruption in the awarding of tenders worth over Sh10 billion by the GDC. EACC is expected to be through with the probe in 60 days.
