Kenya Airways’ fleet of Boeing 787 Dreamliners has emerged top globally in terms of reliability, indicating that the airliner has recovered from a string of mechanical problems experienced during the past four years.

KQ’s fleet posted an operations reliability rate of 99.4 per cent in Boeing’s mid-term technical evaluation report against a performance rate of 98 per cent for other such models currently operating globally.

The national carrier’s score means that only about one flight of every 100 is delayed due to technical issues.

The safety record of an airline is a critical factor in the highly competitive aviation business, with KQ expected to benefit from improved performance of the Dreamliners.

“We are delighted at this ranking, which effectively means that our guests on the Dreamliner routes are now enjoying exceptional time performance from Kenya Airways with minimum delays,” said Mbuvi Ngunze, KQ’s incoming chief executive.

“This technical report also confirms the viability of our ongoing fleet renewal programme.”

The Dreamliner was previously beset by problems, including a battery fire that grounded the model for three months last year and forced a battery redesign.
