Kenya Electricity Generating company (KenGen) has appointed Simon Ngure as acting managing director until a new MD is recruited “in the next few weeks.”

Eng. Ngure, who has been the regulatory affairs director at the company will take over the role starting July 1, following the exit of Eddy Njoroge at the end of this month.

“Eng Ngure’s appointment is until the recruitment of a new managing director is finalised within the next few weeks,” the Kengen Board said in a statement to the Nairobi Securities Exchange.

Last November, the outgoing CEO announced he was leaving the company despite having three more years on his contract that was expected to expire on March 26, 2015. He has been at the hel of Kengen for the last 10 years.

Mr Njoroge has seen the generation capacity of KenGen increase to 1,232 megawatts from 780 in 2003 and is targeting 1,750 MW in 2015 with an emphasis on renewable power, especially geothermal. The company is in the middle of executing power projects that will see add more than 1000MW in the next five years.
