South African retailer Massmart, through its subsidiary Game, is offering discounts on select items to woo buyers at its branch set to open at Nairobi’s Garden City Mall on Thursday.

The company says it has priced a medium-sized TV entertainment unit (Odessa) at Sh14,000, saving buyers Sh5,968. A 21-piece stainless cookware set (Tissolli) will sell for Sh8,500, knocking Sh7,065 off the regular price.

An Addis brand of bin set will retail at Sh2,500, saving prospective buyers Sh1,582. Game will sell Samsung Galaxy A3 for Sh28,500, less Sh1,500 from the regular price.

Garden City Mall, with residential, retail and office spaces, is set to open its doors to the public on Thursday.

The shopping complex, which was built by Actis in partnership with CDC Group (UK’s Development Finance Institution (DFI), is set to give shoppers a taste of global brands.

“We are very excited to be able to open our doors and invite everyone inside to start shopping and to begin growing our Garden City community,” said Actis director Michael Turner in a statement on Monday.

Massmart will also be offering discounts on other items including small generators and pressure cleaners. The bargains will remain valid for the first four days.

Massmart is majority owned by US-based Walmart.

Walmart grew to become the largest retailer in the world by offering the lowest prices in the markets where it operates. The company is able to set lower prices by sourcing from low-cost producers and buying in bulk.

Garden City Mall managers say they have already leased out space to 120 local and international brands. The stores will be spread across three levels of the entire mall letting space.

Homegrown companies like Nakumatt supermarket chain, Tile & Carpet, and Victoria Courts are among local retailers that have booked space at the mall.

Construction of the mall started two years ago. The first phase of the Sh2.3 billion project ($250 million) is almost complete. The initial phase has the mall and apartments.

“We are confident that the scale and quality of this project is something that hasn’t been seen before in East Africa. We are very proud of what we have built so far,” said Mr Turner.

The apartment duplexes at the Garden City are already sold out. Actis had put up 76 two and three-bedroom apartments and duplexes. The second phase of the project will have more residential, retail and office space. It will also have a hotel.
