Nakumatt now joins film distribution bandwagon with new service

Regional retailer Nakumatt Group – through its subsidiary Planet Media Cinemas - has joined the bandwagon of film distribution in Kenya, just days after the arrival of US-based streaming service Netflix Thursday caused a stir this week.

Planet Media Cinemas on Friday announced its formal entry in the film distribution market. The firm currently operates movie theatre halls in Nairobi and Kisumu, and have made a debut by availing a just released Bollywood film, Chalk n Duster, on a digital platform.

The company's director, Raman Subramaniam, said they will leverage their existing network and infrastructure to provide world-class film distribution services of Hollywood and Bollywood, among other film production destinations.

“We recently completed a digital migration project at our Nairobi and Kisumu theatres and we have made a strategic plunge into the film distribution market as we seek to expand our exemplary service in entertainment industry,” said Mr Subramaniam, adding that it will be seeking to satisfy growing local demand for digital film distribution services.

Mr Subramaniam said that the services will soon be extended to Uganda, Tanzania and Rwanda in the coming months to cater for regional film distribution.

He said that they are courting global film distributors like Sony Pictures Entertainment and its subsidiaries, seeking to act as the local film distributor partner.

The local film distribution services is estimated to be valued at more than Sh18 billion annually. It typically involves availing end to end marketing of new film releases.
