PE firm Helios selects vice chairman to Telkom board
Private equity firm Helios Investments Partners has seconded Steven Evans as executive vice-chairman at Telkom Kenya, a newly created position at the telco in which it recently acquired a majority stake from France Telecom.
Mr Evans becomes the first holder of the vice-chairman’s position at Telkom Kenya and will deputise Eddy Njoroge who was retained on the board by Helios.
A holder of an MBA in international business and marketing from the London City Business School and a Bachelor of Science in geology and mathematics from Reading University in the UK, Mr Evans is now responsible for strategy at the telecoms firm.
“This is the first time Telkom Kenya has a vice chairman and will take over the executive responsibilities for strategy,” Telkom Kenya said in a statement. “The composition of the board is not yet complete and a comprehensive list will be issued when it is done.”
The new role adds to Mr Evans’s other assignments including as the telecoms adviser for Helios, non-executive director of HTN Towers in Nigeria, executive adviser to Emagine International in Australia and chairman of Xpres Messaging in the United States.
Mr Evans also served as chief executive at Etisalat Nigeria between 2008 and 2013 and chief executive of BT Mobile in the UK between 2004 and 2007.
Business structure
Other members of Telkom’s board include Treasury secretary Henry Rotich and Esther Koimett, investment secretary at the Finance ministry. In this capacity, Ms Koimett represents the Treasury at Telkom as an alternate to the minister.
