What you need to know:

  • Redhouse has acquired the TBWA Worldwide license in Kenya.
  • This gives Redhouse clients in the East African region access to global markets.
  • TBWA Worldwide clients will also be able to access the regions market through Redhouse.

Former Ogilvy East Africa CEO Koome Mwambia is turning the heat on his former employer after he formed a partnership with global advertising giant TBWA through a start-up Redhouse Group.

Redhouse Group on Wednesday announced that it had signed a partnership with TBWA which had ties with FlameTree Limited—a firm owned by a former Ogilvy executive, Tim Smythe.

The tie-up will help the advertising arm Redhouse acquire more international clients, putting it in a head-to-head battle with Ogilvy East Africa and its parent firm Scangroup, the biggest player in the advertising agency business.

Global market

“The affiliation with TBWA extends to Redhouse Advertising access to global knowledge, tools, network and footprint that is critical in scaling up our operations across multiple markets in Africa,” Mr Mwambia said.

The link with TBWA is the latest in a series of deals by Redhouse, including the hiring of executives from Ogilvy, as it seeks to grow its market share.

It tapped George Ojing to head its new advertising wing from Ogilvy & Mather Kenya where he was the managing director.

It also appointed John Muoria as the head of finance while it named Edward Sekento as the creative director in the newly formed division Redhouse Advertising.

Mr Muoria and Mr Sekento served as group credit manager and creative director respectively at Ogilvy & Mather.

The deal also extends the global battle between US group Omnicom, which owns TBWA, and world’s largest advertising group WPP—which owns a majority stake in Scangroup.

Scangroup is a majority shareholder of Ogilvy East Africa.
