Tullow has sponsored 10 students were last week sponsored to undertake oil-related postgraduate courses in the UK.
The scholarship scheme was launched last year in Kenya and the pioneer class of 10 is currently finishing up their studies.
British explorer Tullow Oil has invested more than Sh48 million ($560,000) in its annual scholarship scheme aimed at developing highly specialised Kenyan professionals in the oil and gas industry.
A total of 10 students were last week sponsored to undertake oil-related postgraduate courses in the UK in fields such as engineering and technology, environment and geosciences, oil and gas economics, law and legal framework.
“There is an acute shortage of people with expertise in oil and gas sector. The courses are not available locally and it takes years to develop skilled and experienced professionals. ” said Martin Mbogo, country manager at Tullow Kenya.
“We are investing in skilled human capital which is a critical resource for any business, and more so in the emerging oil and gas sector.”
Each of the scholarships is valued at Sh4.8 million (56,000) per annum, and covers full tuition fees and a monthly stipend for the entire period of study.

The finds in Etuko-1, Twiga South-1 and Ngamia-1 wells now set Kenya on course to join the league of oil producing nations and change the fortunes of East Africa’s largest economy.
