UAP Life Assurance Limited has joined the list of sponsors for this year’s edition of Kenya’s fastest growing medium-sized companies survey.

The insurer will support the 2013 edition of Kenya’s Top 100 medium-sized firms’ survey to the tune of Sh2.5 million.

UAP said its sponsorship was in recognition of the important role that small and medium-sized enterprises play in the economy.

“We intend to partner with SMEs to mitigate their risks and create thriving ventures,” said Jerim Otieno, UAP Life Assurance managing director, after he signed the sponsorship deal.

UAP has operations in six African countries. The competition is open to companies that are not listed at the Nairobi Securities Exchange and have annual turnovers of between Sh70 million and Sh1 billion.

Participants are also required to present audited financial statements for three consecutive years.

Robert Onyango, the project manager in charge of the Top 100 survey at KPMG, said the initiative is on the look-out for partners whose expertise can add value to small enterprises and improve their output.

“We need partners who can offer solutions in specific areas. There are more opportunities out there and the strong partners that we already have on board is clear indication of the value proposition,” said Mr Onyango.

The list of sponsors includes Sage Pastel, the Nairobi Securities Exchange(NSE), Strathmore University, Ipsos and Kuza Biashara.

Ann Gitao-Kinyua, the Nation Media Group’s marketing director, described the partnership as timely and with the potential of helping extend the project to more businesses and support their growth.

Atlas Builders and Plumbers, a Nairobi-based engineering firm, won last year’s edition of the competition.

This year’s winners will be announced at this week’s gala dinner to be held at Nairobi’s Carnivore Restaurant grounds on Friday.
