Uchumi supermarkets will open two branches in Limuru and Naivasha towns in the next two months and another one in Ukunda by May, chief executive Jonathan Ciano has said.

The Limuru and Naivasha outlets will cost an estimated Sh100 million each to open, financed through proceeds of he retailer’s recent rights issue.

“Each of the two branches will have 75 staff, they will each stand on 25,000 square feet,” said Mr Ciano.

Uchumi raised Sh896 million through a rights issue last year to finance expansion and branch renovations.

“The choice of the two outlets was  based on the  growing population and more so there are few players in these areas,” said Mr Ciano.

Devolved governments are also expected to offer the retailer a boost by raising incomes of the local government employees and suppliers.
