Uhuru Kenyatta urges teachers to return to class

President Uhuru Kenyatta has added his voice to the teachers' strike asking the instructors to leave dialogue channels open as the government seeks amicable solution to the stalemate.

Speaking Thursday in a televised address to the nation, President Kenyatta urged teachers to follow an earlier court ruling which challenged the legality of the strike and asked the instructors to return to class.

“We are ready to engage teachers in negotiations but we cannot do that in the streets,” he said.

The President said teachers should focus on their job (teaching) as the government engages with officials from Knut and Kuppet.

“When it comes to the two legal notices, these points cannot be resolved by shouting.”

He was responding to journalists over Labour secretary Kazungu Kambi’s sentiments that legal notices 534 of 1997 and 16 of 2003 could be degazetted at government’s whim.

Teachers have given classes a wide berth as they push for increased allowances promised to them 16 years ago by former president Moi’s government.
