This weekend we are fighting cancer in Nyali.

Since 1993 Sanlam and the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) have partnered to run the Sanlam Cancer Challenge, a series of golf events that have raised funds and awareness for the fight against cancer.

In South Africa, over 40,000 golfers playing in more than 800 club competitions support CANSA’s programmes including patient care services.

Funds raised through the Sanlam Cancer Challenge have assisted in CANSA’s health awareness campaign, helped accommodate over 2,600 patients at the 11 CANSA Care Homes and provided support to over 13,400 people at its clinics.

In 2013, Pan Africa Life, a subsidiary of Sanlam, launched the Pan Africa Life Golf Challenge, a six part amateur golf series as part of the Sanlam Cancer Challenge, giving Kenyan golfers an opportunity to contribute to this great cause.

Pan Africa Life CEO, Tom Gitogo, said the Kenyan chapter of the Challenge has focused on upcountry clubs.

“In this first edition of the Pan Africa Life Golf Challenge, we focused on Kenya’s upcountry golf clubs; we visited Nanyuki in April went to Eldoret in May and to Nakuru in June,” he said.

“This weekend we will be visiting the Nyali Golf and Country Club, one of the most scenic championship golf course in Kenya. We will be in Nyanza in August and the grand finale will be played at the Muthaiga Golf Club on September 13, 2013.”

Mr Gitogo made these comments whilst presenting a cheque of Sh150,000 to the Kenya Golf Union towards junior golf development.

“It is fitting that we are in Nyali this weekend, because it has continued to produce some of the most outstanding junior golfers in recent years, and we as Pan Africa Life would like to support junior golf development,” he added.

The winners of the Pan Africa Life Golf Challenge will get the opportunity to play in the 2013 Sanlam Cancer Challenge at the Sun City Golf Resort in South Africa from the 21st to 22nd October 2013.

“Our winners will be flown down to South Africa to join other Sanlam guests in fighting cancer,” Mr Gitogo said.

Ernie Els, a former world number one and multiple major winner, is the “Champion of hope” and the patron of the Sanlam Cancer Challenge.

The best golfers in Sun City will get the opportunity to win the “Ernie Els Experience” which includes a round of golf at Oubaa, in George, SA, dinner at The Big Easy restaurant and a wine tasting and lunch at the Ernie Els Winery (www.sanlamcancerchallenge.co.za).

So, if you are in Mombasa this weekend, join Pan Africa Life in their fight against cancer at the Nyali Golf and Country Club.
