Traffic at Mombasa's international airport was temporarily disrupted Wednesday morning following a runway mishap involving a military aircraft.

The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) declined to comment on a suspected mechanical problem, instead referring the Business Daily to the Department of Defence when the airport manager was reached for comment.

Several airlines including Kenya Airways (KQ) and Fly540 said on Twitter that the incident would delay flights from the airport.

“Moi International Airport Runway temporarily closed due to a runway excursion. Delays expected to be incurred on the Mombasa-Nairobi route,” Kenyan carrier KQ wrote on their official Twitter page.

RwandAir said it had to divert its WB 303 Dubai-Mombasa flight to Nairobi after circling around Mombasa Airport with a Fly540 craft also experiencing a similar issue.

"Our 5h0441 is holding in air as Mombasa airport is closed as an aircraft stuck on the runway. If it is not open we will return back to Jomo," Fly540 said.

Back to normal

Regular activity at the airport however resumed early in the afternoon after hours of closure.

"The Runway is now open and operations back to normal. Inconveniences experienced are highly regretted," KQ said.
