Registering companies is set to be transferred from the Attorney-General’s office to a new independent entity.

Attorney-General Githu Muigai has published the Business Registration Service Bill 2014 that vests the registration service with the new outfit dubbed the Business Registration Service.

“The service shall, under the general supervision of the Cabinet secretary, be responsible for the implementation of policies, laws and other matters relating to registration of companies, partnerships and firms,” read the Bill.

Other duties to be handled by the service include bankruptcy, societies, hire purchase, trade unions, chattels transfers, adoption, coat of arms, the national flag, emblems and names.

A board of directors will govern the management of the service and will consist of a chairperson, the Attorney-General, trade principal secretary, devolution and planning principal secretary, Treasury principal secretary, four other members and the registrar-general who will be an ex-officio member.
