  • Addressing the media on Monday, ODM party officials rubbished President Kenyatta’s defense of economy, saying the scary state of the economy is invisible to the president.
  • “I want to liken this economic situation to a plane at 40,000 metres high and there is turbulence. When you are faced with turbulence, you don’t jump, but the cabin crew will tell passengers to fasten their belts,” said Mr Rotich on Saturday.

A section of the opposition has threatened to impeach Finance Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich accusing him of failing to properly account for the Eurobond funds.

Addressing the media on Monday, Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party officials rejected President Kenyatta’s defense of the economy, saying the scary state of the economy is invisible to the president.

“We’ll throw out Rotich through impeachment for failing to come out openly and explain to Kenyans the truth about Eurobond. He’s the right person to explain where the Eurobond money is ,” said Homabay MP Gladys Wanga.

Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leaders led by Ugunja legislator Opiyo Wandayi also called on President Uhuru Kenyatta to give the country the detailed breakdown of how the Eurobond money was spend.

“The president is today quoted saying that the economy is in good shape. His cabinet secretary on the other hand has admitted that the situation is bad. This contradiction is a serious manisfestation of a deep disconnect within government,” said Mr Wandayi.

While addressing golfers at Eldoret Club during the 6th Mancshester Salver annual tournament on Saturday, Mr Rotich, for the first time, admitted that the country was experiencing an economic turmoil and urged Kenyans to “tighten their belts” as they worked on a turnaround.

“I want to liken this economic situation to a plane at 40,000 metres high and there is turbulence. When you are faced with turbulence, you don’t jump, but the cabin crew will tell passengers to fasten their belts,” said Mr Rotich on Saturday.

Theft, lower than expected revenue collection and a high wage bill have left the Treasury broke pushing the government to borrow at high interest rates in the domestic market which inturn has increased borrowing rates.

Addressing the media on Monday, ODM party officials rubbished President Kenyatta’s defense of the economy, saying the scary state of the economy is invisible to the president.

The leaders present include Olga Karani- ODM deputy treasurer, Abdikadir Aden who is the Balambala MP and Gladys Wanga, the MP for Homabay.

Mr Rotich last week published in the dailies what he said was breakdown of the expenditure but the leaders said it was lacking in specifics.

Opposition MPs will however need to convince Jubilee legislators to support the move against the CS if they are to succeed.
