EDITORIAL: Mediation bid timely

Efforts by Ethiopia to mediate in a border dispute between Kenya and Somalia are most welcome.

Neither country can afford the nasty aftermath that comes with disagreements especially given that being neighbours will never change.

This means we have to co-exist or bear the consequences of disagreements.

A decision on Wednesday by both nations to resume diplomatic relations by returning respective envoys should be the first step towards normalising relations.

The fact that Kenya has been helping Somalia over the years in the fight against the Al-Shabaab terrorist group, and having been a host to hundreds of thousands of Somali refugees during troubled times, should not be lost on those trying to hammer out a deal.

Remaining at loggerheads does more harm to populations on both sides and ultimately affects the economies of the region.

The sooner an agreeable deal is reached the better for everyone.
