EDITORIAL: Observe the rule of law

The public ordinarily looks up to political, corporate, religious and other social leaders as paragons of good governance and etiquette.

They are expected to be the pedestals on which the society ascends to greater heights.

It is, therefore, disturbing when two county governors engage in negotiations intended to defeat justice for their own benefit.

The Nairobi and Kiambu governors were on Wednesday heard in a leaked audio clip haggling over how to bend the rules to ensure that Ferdinand Waititu’s spouse was released from custody, even going as far as setting bail terms.

Mike Sonko ordered the release of governor’s wife while her co-accused were left at the mercy of the authorities.

Whether the conversation was legitimate or not is besides the issue. When suspects are arrested for one mistake or the other, the law must take its course.

Bending the system to accommodate the whims of a few in power creates a precedent that Kenya can do without, especially when the government has gone all out to right some of the wrongs. The law is blind, let us keep it that way for both those in power and ordinary citizens.
