EDITORIAL: Power hitches worrying

In many ways, the latest Kenya Power system breakdown that has left some Kenyans in darkness for days is emblematic of the company’s modus operandi.

For a long time, prepaid customers have at times been unable or have experienced long delays while buying electricity units through the digital platforms, yet the company has been unable or unwilling to address the problem with the seriousness it deserves.

Whatever the reason for the inaction may be, it is baffling because having the system working optimally would be beneficial to the company.

It is no wonder that in the recent uproar, there has been claims that the stalling of the digital tokens generation system may not have been natural.

The fact remains that the general public has little understanding, especially when the utility firm acts with monopolistic tendencies, and little concern for the customer.

There is no justification for any company running a crucial system that is not working properly, for such a long time. Besides, the repercussions are especially dire for the small businesses.

In light of all this, the plan to roll out the prepaid system to all domestic users makes nonsense of the company’s intention to grow.

The company must solve the issue once and for all.
